Meet "Doug": The Famous Dockside Turtle of Smoky Mountain H2O Sports

If you've spent any time around the docks at Smoky Mountain H2O Sports, chances are you've already met Doug.

Or maybe you've met three Dougs.

Possibly even ten.

That's because around here, every red-eared slider turtle is affectionately known as "Doug." We couldn't tell you where the tradition started, but it stuck, and now every turtle that swims up to the dock proudly answers to the same name (at least according to our staff).

The Dockside Welcome Committee

As boats return from a day on the water, something interesting happens. Before the engines are even shut off, Doug and his friends begin gathering beneath the docks.

Over the years, these clever turtles have learned that when the dockhands clean off the boats, the occasional crumb from a chip or cracker might accidentally find its way into the water. The turtles patiently circle below, hoping today might be their lucky day.

Guests love spotting the growing crowd of turtles, and it's not uncommon to hear someone on the dock say, "Look, there's Doug!"

"Which one?"

"All of them."

Smarter Than You Might Think

Red-eared sliders are incredibly observant animals. They recognize routines and quickly learn where food is most likely to appear. While their natural diet includes aquatic plants, insects, snails, and small fish, they've figured out that the docks can sometimes offer an unexpected bonus.

Watching them glide through the clear water, patiently waiting for the cleanup to begin, has become one of the little traditions that makes a visit to Smoky Mountain H2O Sports unique.

Why We Love Doug

Doug has become something of a mascot around here. Kids love trying to count how many Dougs they can find, while returning guests often ask if Doug is still hanging around the docks.

The answer is almost always yes.

Actually... several Dougs are usually waiting.

Help Keep Doug Healthy

As much as Doug would probably appreciate a handful of crackers, we ask guests not to feed the turtles. Human snack foods aren't part of a healthy turtle diet, and feeding wildlife can encourage behaviors that aren't good for them in the long run.

The best way to enjoy Doug is simply to watch from the dock as he and the rest of the gang swim around, bask in the sun, and provide a little extra entertainment at the end of a great day on the lake.

Take Doug Home With You

Before you head home, don't forget to stop by the Smoky Mountain H2O Sports office! While the real Doug prefers to stay in the lake, you can take home a reminder of your visit with one of our Doug the Turtle T-shirts or an adorable plush turtle.

Whether you're shopping for a souvenir, a gift for the kids, or just want to remember your favorite dockside mascot, our turtle-themed merchandise is a fun way to celebrate your time on the water.

Who knows? Every time you wear your Doug shirt or see your plush turtle at home, you'll remember the little welcome committee waiting beneath the docks.

And if you come back to visit, don't worry...

Doug will be here waiting for you.
